A Prescient Collage

Beach Fun ©2009 Shani Thomas

Going through photos of work from my collage phase recently, I was struck by this 2009 collage. I thought it rather appropriate to what we are going through right now and decided to share it with you. Like the rest of the world, we're trying to reopen our beaches here in France. You can now swim in the ocean, do aquatic sports, walk along the shore, etc., but spreading out your towel, popping open a beer and catching some rays is still (with a very few strictly regulated exceptions) forbidden. Most people are observing the rules, but some beaches have been forced to close again due to incivility. Knowing just how horribly crowded French beaches can get, as the photo in this France Summer Vacation post demonstrates (I break out in hives just looking at it), I understand why these regulations are needed.

When I made this little collage using a cut-out vintage magazine image and postcard, I couldn't even dream of what we're now going through. My thought at the time was simply how unpleasant crowded beaches could be, but now we have worse things to worry about than kids kicking up sand and surly teenagers playing their music too loud, don't we.

I haven't posted many of my collages on Paperesse, but if you're curious, here's the Retro Look 1959 Vintage birthday card, that segued my collage work into card making.

  1. Beaches are re-opening here too, and, of course, there are those that aren't obeying the rules. As sad as it is, your collage is perfect for the time we are currently in.
