The date above this beauty says 1660, but is that for the door, too? Who knows. |
As I mentioned in my thermal baths post, my husband and I recently spent some time in Saillon, Switzerland.
 |
I love the carvings on this one, especially the grapes. |
We didn't want to spend all our time in the baths, so one day we decided to take a quick 25 minute bus/train ride and visit Sion, capital of the Canton of Valais and a beautiful medieval town (one of Switzerland's best preserved) with origins dating back 5,000 years.
 |
Love the musical instruments on this one and ancient looking marble surrounds. |
There's lots to see in Sion. Unfortunately, we were a bit limited as we didn't realize the day we chose was a public holiday in the Canton of Valais and most things were closed, but that didn't stop us from walking around the town, seeing its beautiful sites (and doors!), and having an excellent lunch.

Notice the harp above this one? I wonder who lived here. |
As the title of this post suggests, I am fascinated by Europe's beautiful doors and surrounds.
 |
I like the patina on this one and the wonky top rectangles. |
In earlier times doors weren't just for personal protection, they were a sign of prestige and an indicator of the property owner's wealth.
 |
The drapery on this one is so well done. |
Some of the doors I like aren't even all that fancy, maybe not even all that old, still there's something there that catches my eye and makes me stop to take a second look.
