Plain wooden napkin ring upcycle with Décopatch paper

I prefer using cloth napkins in our home and since they needn't be changed at every meal (unless you're just a very messy eater), I like having personalized napkin rings so that each person uses his own.

My niece recently visited us and I wanted her to have her own napkin holder. Like her aunt, she has an unusual name – Chyna – that isn't easy to find on ready made personalized items, especially in France.

So, Crafty Auntie made her one. And of course it couldn't be plain, it had to be artistic!

I took a simple thrift store wooden napkin ring, painted it white, and then applied Décopatch paper from my stash. Décopatch (a French company) is a craft product/technique that is very popular here. It's a very, very thin, flexible type of surprisingly strong paper that you can adhere to just about anything. It really is an amazing product and I'm always surprised to not easily find it in the States. I did a search for Décopatch in the USA and it's imported by a company called ExaClair USA, a list is provided where it can be purchased in the USA on their website..  It's definitely worth a bit of effort to find.

You can see where I used it on a styrofoam base for this vintage look heart and these earrings and brooch (how-tos are provided with each post).

Here is the before:

And here are the afters, with Décopatch paper, sticker letters and decorative pearls/gems:

  1. How creative Shani! I love the black and white with two red beads that pop! I bet Chyna loved it - did she take it home with her? Or leave it for her next visit?
