Upcycling Fruit & Vegetable Crates

As I mentioned with my Ikea Desk chair redo post, in addition to bigger projects around the house, I've been catching up on smaller ones as well, like these two fruit and vegetable crates. Several of my favorite shops offer these crates to customers to carry home their purchases, or give special pricing when bought by the crate (i.e. the strawberry crate). I needed a storage box and I liked the strawberry crate's vintage look, so I decided to upcycle – rather than recycle – them.

They were in good shape and finishing them up was simply a matter of applying varnish (3 coats), letting it dry thoroughly between coats.

The smaller one is now in my craft room holding miscellaneous papers (it's a perfect A4 size) and the bigger one holds potting materials on my balcony plant étagère.
